How to identify

What squirrels look like

Eastern grey squirrels, including the black colour phase common in Toronto, are agile climbers that chew their way into roofs.

They are active during the day, especially early morning and late afternoon.

Signs you have squirrels

  • Scurrying and scratching in the attic in the morning
  • Chewed holes in soffits, fascia or roof vents
  • Nesting material visible at roof gaps

Are they dangerous?

Squirrels chew wood, insulation and wiring, and can damage roofs and create fire risks.

How to prevent them

  • Trim branches at least 2 metres from the roof
  • Screen roof and soffit vents
  • Repair damaged soffits quickly
