How to identify

What mice look like

House mice are small, slender rodents with large ears, a pointed nose and a long, thin tail about as long as their body. They are usually grey-brown with a lighter belly.

Their droppings are small, about 3–6 mm, dark and pointed at the ends, often found in cupboards, drawers and along walls.

Signs you have mice

  • Droppings in cupboards, drawers and behind appliances
  • Chewed food packaging, insulation or wiring
  • Scratching in walls or ceilings at night
  • Shredded nesting material in hidden spots
  • A stale, ammonia-like smell

Are they dangerous?

Mice contaminate food and surfaces with droppings and urine, can carry bacteria such as Salmonella, and chew wiring, which can create a fire risk. One pair can produce dozens of young in a few months.

How to prevent them

  • Seal gaps larger than 6 mm around pipes, vents and doors
  • Install door sweeps and repair garage door seals
  • Store food, pet food and bird seed in sealed containers
  • Keep firewood and clutter away from the house
  • Trim vegetation touching the foundation
