How to identify
What fleas look like
Fleas are tiny, wingless, reddish-brown insects flattened side to side. They jump very far for their size.
Most of a flea population lives in carpets and furniture as eggs, larvae and pupae, not on the pet.
Signs you have fleas
- Pets scratching and biting their fur
- Small itchy bites on ankles and lower legs
- Black specks (flea dirt) in pet bedding that turn red when wet
Are they dangerous?
Flea bites are itchy and can cause allergic reactions in pets and people. Fleas can also transmit tapeworms to pets.
How to prevent them
- Keep pets on vet-recommended flea prevention
- Vacuum carpets and furniture often
- Wash pet bedding on high heat
- Treat the home and pets at the same time
