How to identify
What pavement ants look like
Pavement ants are small, dark brown to black ants with fine grooves on the head and thorax. They nest under sidewalks, driveways, patio stones and foundation slabs.
They travel in long trails toward food, especially sweets and grease.
Signs you have pavement ants
- Trails of small ants along counters and floors
- Small piles of sand along sidewalks and patio cracks
- Ants coming up through floor cracks in basements
Are they dangerous?
Pavement ants are mainly a nuisance and do not damage structures, but they contaminate food and can be persistent once they find a source.
How to prevent them
- Wipe up crumbs and sticky spills
- Store sweets and pet food sealed
- Seal cracks in foundation slabs and around doors
- Treat the colony, not just the trail
